The clip has over 3 million views, with followers praising River’s cleverness and predicting a bright future for him
A mom is going viral after her toddler son proved to be one step ahead of her.
Rylie Evans, a 28-year-old mom of two, tells PEOPLE that she had seen lots of people doing a marshmallow challenge with their kids when she decided to try it with her son River, 3. The popular trend showed parents testing their toddlers by putting the fluffy candy in front of them and telling them not to eat it before they come back. After leaving the room for a few seconds, the parents return and see if their toddler was able to resist the urge to enjoy the sweet treat.
In a now-viral clip, the doting mom, who also shares 7-month-old son Riggs with her husband Hayden Evans, 28, gave the trend a try, setting up the camera in front of her son and telling him not to eat the four marshmallows she placed in front of him. As soon as she left the room, her toddler son outsmarted her, reaching over to eat marshmallows from the bag that she had left on the side.
“Well he did what I told him 🤦🏽♀️ big mistake leaving the bag of marshmallows on the table… lol,” she wrote in the caption, followed by a few hashtags.
When Rylie first decided to do the challenge, she originally thought that her son would take one of the marshmallows from the pile. However, she didn’t even expect him to outsmart her in the moment.
“I thought he’d probably take one before I got back, but didn’t even think about accidentally leaving [the bag] close by,” she says, laughing at the moment.
The mom of two explains that she didn’t initially realize that her son found a loophole in the challenge. She explains that she caught on after coming back and seeing the candy bag nearby.
“My first reaction was ‘dang I messed it up,’ ” she says. “[I] didn’t realize that it was actually really smart on his part and definitely [had] no clue it would go viral. I didn’t post it until [a] couple months after it happened.”
