Best known for his performance on Sons of Anarchy, Charlie Hunnam is now being featured as the titular character on Monster: The Ed Gein Story — the newest installment of Ryan Murphy’s Monster series for Netflix.
In a new interview, Hunnam discussed his time starring in the original U.K. series Queer as Folk in 1999. Even though he’s a straight man, the actor told Variety that he still navigated some homophobia and even got into an “altercation with a guy that looked like it was going to escalate into violence.”
Hunnam also talked about his own father questioning the actor’s sexuality due to his performance on Queer as Folk.
“He didn’t quite get it,” Hunnam explained. “He asked if I was gay and if this was representative of the life I was living.”

Hunnam described his dad as “an incredibly tough scrap-metal merchant in a brutal industry. He was sort of a king in our city. He wanted me to take over his business, and I just knew that I wouldn’t be able to survive in that world.”
The actor recalled that his lack of interest in running the business was a huge source of disappointment for his father. Yet, finding success in other projects like Children of Men, Pacific Rim, and even Sons of Anarchy eventually healed that wound between them.
