The title of Morrissey’s new single, “Make-Up Is A Lie,” reminds me of those memes where dudes tell each other to take girls swimming on the first date so they don’t get “catfished” by the girls’ makeup. The self-deprecating, “sexually ambiguous” frontman of the now-defunct Smiths came out with the new single on Friday.
This is the latest breadcrumb in a series of cryptic hints Morrissey has been dropping since mid-December. On December 19, we learned that he has signed with Sire Records. On Christmas Day, he dropped the track list to a new forthcoming album, which is apparently not Bonfire of Teenagers, a different album everyone thought he was going to release. Until now, I guess.
Frankly, we’re feeling whelmed by this development. Morrissey is kind of a pretentious jerk, especially according to Tori Amos, who has nursed a decades-long grudge against him. “I had beef with Morrissey in ‘92,” Amos told Pitchfork in 2017. “He didn’t understand that I can roll.” The 1992 incident she’s referring to was on the set of Later… With Jools Holland when Morrissey allegedly asked Amos, “What the fuck do you know?” when she complimented his work. As if she isn’t a literal piano virtuoso.
The title of the album Morrissey is threatening to release hasn’t been revealed yet, although the aforementioned track list that was unveiled on Christmas includes titles like “The Monsters of Pig Alley,” “Many Icebergs Ago,” and, of course, the freshly released lead single, “Make-Up Is A Lie.”
