🕰️ History & Significance
Mysore Dasara is the state festival (Nadahabba) of Karnataka, celebrated with great pomp in Mysore (Mysuru).
It traces back to the Vijayanagara Empire (15th century) and was later carried on by the Wodeyar dynasty. Raja Wodeyar I officially began the 10-day observance around 1610.
The festival celebrates the victory of good over evil — specifically, the legend of Goddess Chamundeshwari (Durga) slaying the demon Mahishasura.
Key traditions include:
• Navaratri (nine nights) leading up to Vijayadashami.
• Mahanavami (ninth day) when the royal sword is worshipped, processions with decorated animals.
• Vijayadashami (tenth/eleventh day in 2025) — the grand procession called “Jumbo Savari” (howdah-ride of the idol of the goddess), the illumination of the Palace, cultural programmes, and the torchlight parade Panjina Kavayatthu.
