As the investigation into Nancy Gutherie’s disappearance continues, a former police detective has shared his thoughts on the kidnapper’s “poor planning.”
Savannah’s 84-year-old mother went missing near Tuscan, Arizona, on January 31. While the case started as a missing person report, it has since developed into a major criminal investigation, with authorities believing that she was abducted from her home in her sleep.
Health concerns have since been raised as Nancy had significant mobility limitations, requires daily medication for cardiac issues, and uses a pacemaker. Now, former police detective Morgan Wright, CEO & Founder National Center for Open and Unsolved Cases, has weighed in with his thoughts on Nancy’s disappearance and one major mistake her alleged kidnappers made.
In the most recent update in the case, TMZ reported that they received an alleged ransom note demanding payment for Guthrie’s release. According to the outlet, the note claims Guthrie is being held by an abductor seeking a substantial amount of Bitcoin in exchange for her return.
One issue that has garnered attention is whether or not Nancy is healthy and safe if she was abducted, considering she needs daily medication. In a follow-up search of her home, authorties discovered this vital medication along with her cellphone, wallet, watch, hearing aid, and car.

In an interview with the Express US, Wright said, “A ransom scenario imposes a hard constraint: the victim must be alive to maintain leverage. If an offender knew Nancy depended on her medication, locating the medication would be operationally rational, not compassionate — it protects the value of the crime.”
He continued, “Ignoring that constraint introduces uncontrolled medical risk that could collapse the offender’s objective. I think the medication issue is less about cruelty versus care and more about planning sophistication and foreknowledge: behavior consistent with preserving the victim supports a ransom logic, while behavior that endangers survival suggests either poor planning or a motive not centered on financial negotiation. It can still be a kidnapping without being a kidnapping for ransom”
Despite circulating reports of this alleged ransom note, police have not confirmed its authenticity or contents. In a new Instagram post, Savannah and her two siblings spoke directly to their mother’s alleged kidnapper pleading for her to be brought home safely.

In the video, Savannah’s brother Cameron said, “Whoever is out there holding our mother, we want to hear from you. We haven’t heard anything directly. We need a way to communicate so we can move forward. But first, we need to know that you have our mom. We are waiting for contact.”
In the same video, Savannah said, “On behalf of our family, we want to thank all of you for the prayers for our beloved mom, Nancy. We feel them, and we continue to believe that she feels them too.”
The FBI has announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to Nancy’s safe return. No suspects have been identified at this time.
