Netflix has officially announced a new original anime movie from veteran animator Shingo Yamashita, known for his work on Naruto: Shippuden and Jujutsu Kaisen. Yamashita will make his feature directorial debut with the film, which is scheduled for a global premiere on the platform.
The movie, titled Cosmic Princess Kaguya!, will re-imagine the 10th-century folktale story The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. Per What’s on Netflix, the film will be released on Jan. 22, 2026, on the streaming platform. Director Yamashita said that he is pouring all of his expertise in visual expression into the movie, which is also influenced by his “love for unique characters” and “deep affection for the internet culture” originating in the 1990s.
