The fallout from Sarah Ferguson’s resurfaced “reputational napalm” emails to Jeffrey Epstein has led to actress Natalie Dormer, who portrayed her in the upcoming series The Lady, to pull out of promoting the project in response.
Ferguson, who publicly severed ties on her former friendship with the disgraced financier and late convicted sex offender in 2011, was revealed to have allegedly kept in touch with him after doing so and apologizing to him in emails, where she said she was trying to protect her own reputation as the Duchess of York.
Though she has since claimed that the emails were in response to threats made by Epstein to “destroy” her family, she is still facing backlash over their existence.
Now, Dormer, who is starring as Ferguson in the series, which follows the career of former royal dresser Jane Andrews, has spoken out on the controversy.
In a statement to Variety, Dormer said it was “impossible” for her to reconcile “inexcusable” behavior. As a result, she wouldn’t promote the project and would donate her entire salary from it.
“I knew portraying the script’s Sarah Ferguson would require nuance. People are layered, their journeys are full of highs and lows, and as an actor, my job is to lean into those elements and bring them to life with honesty and empathy,” she said.
“Since completing the project, new information has come to light that makes it impossible for me to reconcile my values with Sarah Ferguson’s behavior, which I believe is inexcusable. For that reason, I will not be taking part in the promotion of the project.”
“In keeping with my commitment to the well-being of children, I have donated my entire salary from this project to the National Association for People Abused in Childhood (NAPAC) and the Centre of Expertise on Child Sexual Abuse (hosted by Barnardo’s).”
Following the reveal of the emails, Ferguson has also been dropped by seven different charities, which said it would be “inappropriate” for her to remain as their patron or ambassador.”

The email allegedly came one month after she gave a March 2011 interview that expressed remorse for her connection to Epstein.
Epstein died in a federal jail cell in Manhattan in August 2019 as he awaited trial on sex-trafficking charges. His death was ruled a suicide.
Ferguson’s ex-husband, Prince Andrew, stepped down from his royal roles that same year, after an interview denying claims about him having sex with girls trafficked by Epstein, including Virginia Guiffre.
He also settled a civil lawsuit filed by Guiffre in 2022, which saw him donating money to her charity for victims of abuse.
