Like a bird, Nelly Furtado is spreading her wings and flying towards a new era of her life.

The Canadian singer-songwriter recently reflected on her decades-long career in the music industry, revealing her intentions to stop performing in the foreseeable future.

Nelly Furtado rose to fame with her trip-hop-inspired album, “Whoa, Nelly!” in 2000. Although she went on hiatus in 2017, the entertainer’s fame only continued to skyrocket, leading to the release of her seventh studio album in September 2024.

Furtado announced her performance hiatus on Friday, October 24, in a lengthy Instagram post. She shared two slides, with the first capturing her 20-year-old self posing in an off-the-shoulder pink dress. The snap was taken ahead of her first professional performance at Lilith Fair.

The second slide featured a video from Furtado’s performance in Berlin this summer. The crowd’s passionate chants and cheers helped the singer realize what “receiving flowers means” after 25 years of success in the music industry.

Although Furtado reflected on her achievements with gratitude, she noted that it was time for a change. “I have decided to step away from performance for the foreseeable future and pursue some other creative and personal endeavours that I feel would better suit this next phase of my life,” she announced.

The Singer Reflected On Her Rise To Fame

Furtado’s lengthy message captured her journey as a rising artist in the early 2000s to becoming someone still relevant to newer generations. She reflected on her successes, claiming she was lucky to have turned songwriting from a hobby into her career.

Although she was stepping back from performing, Furtado declared she would “identify as a songwriter forever.” She expressed her love and gratitude to both new and longtime fans, thanking them for their support throughout the years, whether by listening to her music or attending concerts.

Furtado confessed that she never expected to become a hit with a new generation of fans in 2025 when she released her debut studio album in 2000. “To have so many people rediscovering my music has been surreal and joyful,” she wrote, adding:

“It’s been so fun embracing this opportunity, getting out on stages again and seeing up close, the true lasting power of good music. It’s made me really believe in magic.”

Furtado’s announcement sparked bittersweet reactions from fans, many of whom were saddened by her sudden hiatus. “I feel like we just got you back recently after years away, and you’re leaving again!!!” an IG user lamented.

Another echoed similar sentiments, writing, “Omg noooo! I can’t believe I won’t be able to see you perform live! I have been waiting for a US tour since forever, and I’m heartbroken it’s never gonna happen now.” Besides the heartbroken comments, other fans thanked Furtado for the memories.

One IG user dubbed Furtado “an absolute legend and Queen,” while another claimed her debut album got them through some dark times. The love continued, with some expressing excitement for the singer’s future, hoping she would one day return to performing on stage.

The ‘I’m Like a Bird’ Hitmaker Went On Hiatus In 2017

Furtado’s decision to step back from performing comes eight years after she went on hiatus. According to Vulture, she took a break from music in 2017 because she could not handle the level of fame she had achieved.

Following her successful debut album, Furtado gained more recognition as an artist for collaborating with Timbaland on her third studio album, “Loose.” The 2006 project featured hits like “Promiscuous” and “Maneater.”

Although the fame made her uncomfortable, Furtado regained her confidence when fans started remixing her popular songs on TikTok. The buzz soon made her viral among a new generation of listeners, leading to her 2022 performance at Drake’s OVO Fest and the creation of her seventh studio album, “7.”
