Puuluup will perform CitySpace’s Blue Room at Old Town Hall, 43 Main St., Easthampton, on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 8 p.m.

Puuluup is a self-described “neo-zombie Estonian post-folk” duo made up of Ramo Teder and Marko Veisson — two musicians who resurrect the ancient talharpa, a four-stringed Baltic bowed lyre, and fuse it with modern looping, beatboxing, and playful absurdity.

Veisson, an anthropologist with fieldwork in West Africa, brings a global perspective to the pair’s compositions, while Teder’s command of sound effects and vocal textures rounds out their sound.

Tickets are available at CitySpaceEasthampton.org.

The performance is presented in collaboration with CitySpace and Secret Planet. Secret Planet is a community-supported music series bringing borderless musical curation to culture spaces around Western Massachusetts on the farm-share model. Learn more at www.secretplanet.live.

HCC 24-hour theater festival

The annual Phillips Festival, an evening of short plays written, directed, and staged in 24 hours by Holyoke Community College alumni, students, staff, and friends, returns on Saturday, Sept. 20, for its eighth year.

The festival raises money for the Leslie Phillips Theater Fund for Arts and Education, honoring the legacy of Leslie Phillips, founder of the HCC theater program.

To produce the Leslie Phillips Festival, HCC alumni, students, staff and friends register to participate as writers, directors, actors, or members of the stage crew. This year, writers will meet with the actors on Friday, Sept. 19, the night before the show, to receive props, prompts, and character assignments. They have until 6 a.m. the next morning to write their plays. Two hours later, actors and directors meet for day-long rehearsals.

All the original plays will be performed that evening, Sept. 20, starting at 7:30 p.m., but the festivities begin at 6 p.m. in the theater lobby with a green carpet pre-show with alumni, friends, and fellow theater lovers.

Funds raised from the festival enable the HCC theater department to hold master classes, make capital improvements, and hire guest artists.

North Leverett Sawmill exhibit

An exhibit of artwork inspired by the North Leverett Sawmill and its environs will be on display at the Leverett Library, 75 Montague Road, Leverett, throughout September and October.

The exhibition, titled “Art & Crafts Inspired by the 1774 North Leverett Sawmill,” will feature the work of dozens of professional and aspiring artists, including some Pioneer Valley favorites. Paintings, etchings, photographs, and sculpture will be on view, along with fabric art, collage, sketchbook drawings, and digital art.

Literary Monsters

On Sept. 20, the historic halls of Wistariahurst Museum, 238 Cabot St., Holyoke, will come alive with “Literary Monsters” — a queer, multi-sensory performance blending shadow puppetry, live music, and gothic literature.

Created and performed by singer-songwriter Jess Martin, puppeteer Amy West, and multi-instrumentalist/performer Abby Hanna, this immersive evening invites you to see classic monsters through a lens of identity, queerness, and transformation. This 50-minute performance includes vivid storytelling, original music, and arresting visuals that pull you into a dreamlike space between page and stage.

‘English’ in Hartford

TheaterWorks Hartford, under the direction of Artistic Director Rob Ruggiero and Managing Director Jeff Griffin, and Long Wharf Theatre, under the artistic leadership of Jacob Padrón, recently announced a co-production of English by Sanaz Toossi, winner of the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Directed by Arya Shahi, this production runs Oct. 2 to Nov. 2 at TheaterWorks Hartford before it moves to Long Wharf Theatre Jan. 16 to Feb. 1, 2026.

“English Only” is the mantra that rules one classroom in Iran, where four adults are preparing for the TOEFL – the Test of English as a Foreign Language. Together with their teacher, they leapfrog through a linguistic playground that is a funny, stunning triumph about the universal foibles of language and miscommunication.

The cast of English includes Neagheen Homaifar (Selling Kabul, Scorched), Sahar Milani (Law & Order), Afsheen Misaghi (Succession), Anahita Monfared (For Her, Firefly Lane), and Pantea Ommi (Much Ado About Nothing), all of whom will be making their TheaterWorks Hartford debuts.
