Meghan Markle and Prince Harry found themselves being made fun of in a new Netflix show after their deal with the streaming giant was “downgraded.”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex signed a five-year deal with Netflix after stepping down from the royal family. When their partnership came up for renewal, they made a new multi-year, first-look deal for both film and television projects.
It’s a looser arrangement than their previous deal, with some critics suggesting it could allow Netflix to easily cut ties with Harry and Meghan.
Amid the drama, Meghan and Harry were mocked in the brand new season of Nobody Wants This.
In the show, a fight broke out between warring sisters Joanne, played by Kristen Bell, and Morgan, played by Justine Lupe. The pair were arguing over a romantic relationship.
In the middle of the argument, Joanne turned to her sister and asked, “Am I supposed to believe everything you say? According to you, you could have been Meghan Markle?”
Morgan responded, “I said I saw Prince Harry at a bar and there was a vibe, okay? And there was a vibe!”
The Nobody Wants This joke came after a source claimed Meghan and Harry’s new Netflix deal is an “elegant way” for the streaming giant to “cut ties.”
The source suggested the new watered down deal allows Netflix to easily cut ties with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex if they’re not keen on their ideas.
“This announcement is potentially an elegant way for Netflix to cut its ties with the Sussexes if they don’t come up with anything juicy and personal, such as their 2022 docu-series Harry & Meghan,” the source told the Daily Mail.
A spokesperson for Harry and Meghan issued a statement when asked about what the couple will be paid for the deal, saying, “I can say no more owing to commercially confidential contractual agreements.”
Meghan praised her new Netflix deal when it was announced, saying she and Harry were “proud” of it.
“We’re proud to extend our partnership with Netflix and expand our work together to include the As Ever brand,” the former Suits actress said in a statement.
The Duchess of Sussex added, “My husband and I feel inspired by our partners who work closely with us and our Archewell Productions team to create thoughtful content across genres that resonates globally, and celebrates our shared vision.”
