Netflix users are set for a major entertainment boost this Christmas season, as the streaming giant has begun sending emails and messages to subscribers announcing its landmark move to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery’s studios and streaming division in a colossal USD 72 billion deal. The popular streaming platform, though, clarified that nothing will immediately change as it is still in the final stages of sealing the deal.

The development marks one of the most significant shake-ups in the global entertainment landscape.

In its communication to users on Sunday, Netflix confirmed that it has reached a definitive agreement to purchase Warner Bros. Discovery’s extensive film and television assets.

The acquisition includes Warner Bros’ legendary movie and TV studios, HBO, HBO Max, and DC Entertainment—bringing some of the world’s most iconic franchises under Netflix’s umbrella for the first time.

“We’ve recently announced that Netflix will acquire Warner Bros., including its film and television studios, HBO Max and HBO. This unites our leading entertainment service with Warner Bros.’ iconic stories, bringing some of the world’s most beloved franchises like Harry Potter, Friends, The Big Bang Theory, Casablanca, Game of Thrones and the DC Universe together with Stranger Things, Wednesday, Squid Game, Bridgerton and KPop Demon Hunters,” the text of the mail sent to its subscribers read.

However, it cautioned users against getting a bit too excited as of now, as the streaming giant is yet to complete some of the deal finalisation formalities.

“Nothing is changing today. Both streaming services will continue to operate separately. We have more steps to complete before the deal is closed, including regulatory and shareholder approvals. You’ll hear from us when we have more to share,” it added.

Netflix also asked users to reach out to their Help Centre for any queries regarding the new content about to be introduced on the platform.

The acquisition still requires regulatory and shareholder approval, including oversight from the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Final closure is expected following the planned spinoff of Discovery Global, projected for the third quarter of 2026.

Earlier, Netflix Co-CEO Greg Peters exuded confidence that the acquisition will “accelerate our business for decades to come,” while Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav said the merger unites “two of the greatest storytelling companies in the world.”

The company has also reassured fans of theatrical cinema that it intends to preserve Warner Bros’ film release model, even as more titles become available for streaming.

Meanwhile, Hollywood’s creative unions—including the Directors Guild of America, led by filmmaker Christopher Nolan—have expressed concerns about further consolidation in the industry.

For consumers, however, this Christmas brings the promise of an upcoming entertainment explosion.

Though no immediate changes will occur, Netflix users may soon enjoy access to one of the richest content libraries ever assembled—combining Warner Bros’ century-old storytelling legacy with Netflix’s global streaming dominance.
