New Bern leaders say a taxpayer-funded study aimed at bringing more family entertainment to the city is complete, and the results are expected to be released next week.
Mayor Jeffery Odham said the city has received the findings of a $17,000 feasibility study that examined what types of entertainment could succeed in New Bern over the long term. The study was designed to identify attractions that would be sustainable and appeal to both residents and visitors.
Odham said city leaders are reviewing the findings before making the report public, adding that the results were not surprising.
“We have a gap in our community for family entertainment, and we do need something here, but this study is so detailed,” Odham said. “It provides, you know, a bowling alley for example; it provides how many lanes would be sustainable, so if someone says I want to build a 32-lane bowling alley, well the study we have says it should probably be a 24-lane, so it gets to that granular level of details.”
Odham said the study is also intended to serve as a recruitment tool to attract private businesses to New Bern, rather than having city staff develop a facility.
The study has been led since May by Amusement Entertainment Management, a New Jersey-based company.
