NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Elon Musk’s The Boring Company (TBC) has released an update on next steps in the Music City Loop project, and shared more details on what local residents can expect during its construction.

In a post to its website, TBC said discussions with state and local officials about the tunnel system began in March 2024, more than a year before the first public announcement was made.

TBC said the project is currently in the design phase, and the company is working with stakeholders on the final alignment, performing geotechnical borings and starting utility coordination.

Proposed ‘Music City Loop’ route features stops at Music City Center, State Capitol

Site preparation is planned to take place through September 2025, and tunneling is expected to begin within the last three months of the year.

Construction will start with one tunnel boring machine launched from the site near the Tennessee State Capitol and scale up to at least six. The company plans to construct at least three more tunnel launch sites as the project develops.

The first operational segment is expected to open in spring of 2027.

Proposed Music City Loop route released

During a Metro Council meeting in July, Metro officials provided a map of what the Music City Loop might look like. The map shows the route of the 9.5-mile-long tunnel, which features stops at BNA, the State Capitol building and the Music City Center.

The system will be set up as alignments of two separate tunnels running inbound and outbound from the airport. They will be dug approximately 30 feet underground to avoid contact with utility lines.

The company said the tunnel boring machines operate on a redundant navigation system with an accuracy of about two inches. The tunnel boring machines and support vehicles that will be used in the project are zero-emission and all-electric. TBC said its construction processes and tunnel designs generate minimal vibration and noise, claiming that pedestrians would feel less shaking from the tunnel than from a person walking next to them on the sidewalk.

In areas where the tunnel may run under private property, permission from the property owner is required. Interested property owners will be asked to enter a standard easement agreement with TBC, which would allow only tunnel to be built under the land, or a station agreement, which would allow for a tunnel and station.

Waste generated during construction will be disposed of according to state regulations.

The company stated that the tunnel is fully funded by private investors. The cost to ride has not yet been announced, but the company said fares are “expected to be lower than other transportation options.”

TBC said project updates will be posted periodically in blog posts to its website and on X. The first update is expected to be posted on Oct. 1.
