The president of Florida A&M University has apologized to an Alabama State University dance team after FAMU’s marching band announcer referred to Alabama State’s plus-size dance squad, the Honey Beez, as “the new face of Ozempic” during halftime of Saturday’s football game.

“During the halftime of the Florida A&M University vs. Alabama State University football game, an inappropriate and offensive remark was made by a Marching 100 announcer,” said the statement from Florida A&M president Marva Johnson, posted to the school’s official Instagram account on Sunday.

Johnson expressed her “deepest and sincerest apologies” to the team, the marching band, the university community and Alabama State president Quinton T. Ross.

“I have spoken directly with President Ross to convey my regret and to reaffirm that such comments are unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” Johnson expressed. “Florida A&M University is taking immediate steps to ensure accountability within our organization and to prevent incidents like this in the future.”

“I have personally spoken with the President of Florida A&M University and with the Commissioner of the Southwestern Athletic Conference to express my displeasure with these short-sighted comments, and they have both affirmed their agreement with my sentiments,” Ross wrote.

He went on to condemn the remarks made by announcer Joe Bullard towards the dance team and reaffirmed his support for both the institution and the Mighty Marching Hornets.

“The Honey Beez, along with the Mighty Marching Hornets, dedicate countless hours to their craft to deliver the unforgettable, show-stopping performances that embody the pride and excellence of Alabama State University,” he wrote. “To have their artistry disrespected after such a performance is absolutely unacceptable.”

He concluded by praising the Honey Beez and recognizing their impact.

“Honey Beez, please know that you are celebrated, valued, and admired for the joy you bring to the Hornet Nation, and also for the bold and fearless way you represent the very best of ASU,” Ross said. “Continue to shine, because your light cannot be dimmed by negativity.”
