A NEW office has been set up which aims to attract film and TV production companies to the Cumberland Council area.
Members of the council will be given an update on the creation of the Cumberland Film Office by councillor Anne Quilter (Morton, Labour), the vibrant and healthy places portfolio holder, at Carlisle’s Civic Centre on Tuesday (November 4).
In her report to the council, she said: “The Cumberland Film Office has been in development over the last few months, and we have partnered with Creative England to advise and provide support.
“This also places Cumberland on the mailing list for production companies looking for specific locations.
“The aim in the first instance is to streamline the process for production companies approaching the council for permissions to film, ensuring this is taking place safely.
“Further development of the film office will see active promotion of Cumberland to attract filming which will not only generate revenue that can be re-invested but also to encourage production companies to offer opportunities to our communities, particularly young people to take part whether that be set building, extras, runners, photography, filming etc.
“We have also been working with a number of production companies to find out how Cumberland Council can provide the best service.”
Notable film and TV productions that have been filmed in Cumbria and the Lake District include Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens which used Derwentwater and Thirlmere as locations in this 2015 box office hit.
