Foo Fighters drummer Ilan Rubin has admitted that he “didn’t expect” to be recording music with the rock icons.
Rubin, who despite only being 37, has already played with the likes of Nine Inch Nails, Paramore and Danny Elfman, was officially confirmed as the band’s new drummer last summer before playing his first show with the Foo’s in September.
He exited Nine Inch Nails to join Foo Fighters, and in a bizarre turn of events, Josh Freese, who he replaced in the Foo Fighters, replaced him in Nine Inch Nails.
Notably, Freese did not contribute to any recordings during his two-year tenure with Grohl recording the drums himself for their 2023 album, But Here We Are.
Now, in a new interview on The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X, Rubin has opened up about his surprise about playing on their new album, Your Favorite Toy, which is set to arrive in April.
Rubin divulged, “Honestly, I didn’t expect to be recording with the band and certainly not as quickly as everything unfolded. So, it was great to come in and the next day start recording ‘Asking For A Friend.’”
He added, “And then this album came kind of out of nowhere, and we got it all done really quickly. So, everything has been moving at a great pace. Especially as a new guy when you don’t know what to expect, I don’t know what to have any assumptions, so I’m kind of just going with the flow.”
The drummer is seemingly loving life in the Foo Fighters so far, sharing, “Everything has been a great ride so far.”
Last week, Grohl acknowledged Freese’s departure for the first time. During a conversation with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, he stated that it was a band decision that took several months to reach, and revealed, “Basically, we called Josh, and were like, ‘Hey man, that was awesome. That was such a blast, thank you so much, but we are going to move on and find another drummer.’”
He continued, “After that, we didn’t make a press release, tweet anything or do interviews. We didn’t say anything. Since then, there’s been a lot of talk about it, but I think Josh said it best when he said that he didn’t feel our music really resonated with him, and that’s really important.”
The Foo Fighters singer then said that with Rubin “we feel like a band again” and their new record, Your Favorite Toy, is “a band album”.
Foo Fighters are currently in the UK after a brief trip to Ireland that saw them perform an intimate show in Dublin, and an even more intimate concert at a church, which fits just 80 people, in Dingle. They play the Shepherd’s Bush Empire tonight (February 25th) and will then take on the O2 Ritz in Manchester on February 27th.
