A movie was filmed in the Triangle — and now it’s popular on streaming.
“The One Next Door” is trending on the entertainment platform Tubi after it premiered Friday, July 10. All of the scenes were shot last summer in North Carolina, and the setting was a change for the Michigan-based filmmakers.
“It was a wonderful experience but it was extremely hot,” Tonja Ayers, writer, producer and co-director of the film, told The N&O in a Wednesday, July 22 email. “Even the natives said it was hotter than usual. It was 100 to 102 almost every day that we filmed. The cities were beautiful and the people were so nice.”
Here’s what we know about the new thriller and its Raleigh-area filming locations.

What is the movie about?
“The One Next Door” is only available to watch on Tubi, a free streaming platform. The movie is about a husband and wife whose lives experience a shakeup after they get a new neighbor.
“As boundaries are crossed, loyalty is questioned, and danger closes in, their seemingly perfect life begins to unravel as their family is overtaken by the one next door,” The Shoe Lady Productions wrote in a news release. “The film stars Dez Cortez Crenshaw, Robyn Rose, Don Snipes, Kamal Smith, Kennedie Olivia Reeves, Shelby Leigh, Lisa Schuster, Sheryl Riddick, and Tyler Burt.”
The week of its debut, Variety magazine and data website Luminate named the movie one of the “most-watched streaming originals.” At one point, the production company said it hit No. 1 on Tubi.
As of July 22, the movie appeared on a Tubi webpage of “most popular” content. The N&O has reached out to the streaming platform for more information about the rankings and is awaiting a response.
Where was it filmed in NC?
Sharp-eyed viewers may recognize North Carolina locations in the movie. Most of the filming was done at a duplex in Apex, a suburb southwest of Raleigh.
Here’s a list of other filming locations in the Raleigh area:
“Dozens of local North Carolina crew members, actors and extras were cast to help bring authenticity to the film’s neighborhood setting,” the production company said in its news release, adding that the project highlights “the Triangle region as an attractive destination for independent filmmaking.”
When asked whether the movie is set in North Carolina and whether it has references to this state, Ayers wrote: “The dialogue is pretty ambiguous however the restaurant Fiori is highlighted in the film.”
So, how did the movie end up being filmed in North Carolina? It turns out, cinematographer Rene Olmos lives here.
“By combining Detroit’s established independent film talent with North Carolina’s skilled crews and local performers, the production created a film that reflects the strengths of both filmmaking communities,” The Shoe Lady Productions wrote.
Other NC film projects
“The One Next Door” isn’t the only on-screen project to come to North Carolina.
The ABC drama “R.J. Decker” is currently shooting its second season in the Wilmington area.
And other new filming projects — including the Hallmark holiday movie “A Grand Biltmore Christmas” and season two of the Netflix show “The Hunting Wives” — also were based in the state, The N&O previously reported.
