Michael Sean Perry shows flashes of a compelling storyteller, particularly on “Jacob Phillip Meyers,” where his narrative instincts feel sharp and intentional. Still, the imbalance between his strong instrumental work and more limited vocal range becomes hard to ignore as he tends to stay firmly in one lane vocally, rarely stretching beyond a comfortable pocket. “Clown About Town” leans heavily on the spirit—and structure—of Johnny Cash’s “A Boy Named Sue,” to the point where it invites a comparison it can’t quite win. That said, Perry’s guitar work is undeniably impressive. The real question becomes who (or what) should be leading the charge.
