New Music Friday: 30 Hip-Hop, R&B Releases You Need On Your Playlist

We’re back with another playlist update with a slew of great new tracks added to our Discovery playlist on Spotify and Apple Music. Naarm-based artist Kee’ahn takes our Track of the Week with her new single “The Way I Love” – the final single from the new EP for me for you, which is out now via Northside Records.

“The Way I Love” is a really gorgeous neo-soul offering, steeped in nostalgia and a classic vintage sound, Kee’ahn’s sublime vocals grab you from the outset. But, the instrumentation (especially the trumpet and organ) really helps set the mood and gets the vibes in the right place.

The single is a reflection on boundaries and the evolving nature of love. According to Kee’ahn the track is ‘about making decisions that serve me for how I need to be treated in relationships… about realising how clarity, honesty, and generosity are the bare minimum and that we all deserve to be around people who meet us in our entirety.’

You can catch Kee’ahn on her four date For Me For You EP tour which kicks off in Sydney at the end of the month. Tickets are available now.

“Year Of Trouble” from the consummate singer/songwriter Stella Donnelly is a heart-laid-bare musing on a relationship that has ended. With pared-back vocals and piano, the raw emotions are felt intimately. Stella shares; “This one is all heart no ego, all pain no gain. I originally tried to make this a dance-floor heartbreak but I was being too ambitious and overthinking it. Julia [Wallace] helped me figure out that I just needed to play it by myself.”

Stella has announced a global tour to celebrate the release of her forthcoming album, Love and Fortune (7th November). The Australian leg kicks off in Sydney in February, then hits the UK in March, followed by Brussels, Berlin, Utrecht, and Paris. Head to the website for all the details.

Melbourne’s Holly Hebe has been building a solid fanbase with her dreamy pop and lyrical musings. “Strobe Lights” is the latest single and celebrates the joy of a night on the dancefloor, uninhibited, liberating and without being weighed down by others. It opens with a flurry of piano keys, before sliding into her dreamy vocals, wrapped together with her electronic beats and sparkling production.

“Sweet Something” is the new single from Australian singer-songwriter and Voice Australia alumni Lachie Gill, the latest taster from his next body of work. Produced with Andy Mak and with the acclaimed Thom Mak on the co-write, “Sweet Something” is a charming shot of positivity wrapped up in a pop ballad. It combines some lovely layered harmonies and a simple, yet infectious, pop melody, with the end result being an ear worm of a track.

This week saw The Belair Lip Bombs finally release the studio version of long-standing live favourite “Back of my Hand” (worth the wait!). The release comes ahead of the band’s forthcoming album Again, which is out October 31st on Third Man Records. Though that’s not the band’s only news this week, with the announcement of their co-headline US tour with dust in March/April next year. Before then, they’re heading off to Europe and the UK in November, before returning to Australia for Laneway.

We love being able to give some love to a debut release, and we have a cracker in “Too True for You” from Ruby and the Clumsy Dollies. Front woman Ruby Rogers-Garcia has Australian roots, but New York is her home, and the track and forthcoming album (New and Improved – out Nov 7) was recorded in the Lower East Side of NYC. It’s a brilliant, shiny, snappy slice of rock n roll. With the urgency of The Ramones, this is all killer, no filler. At a tick under 2 minutes, it’s packed with urgent guitar solos, some fuzzy bass, sweet melodies, and a stern takedown of an ex-partner.

Ruby explains, “This song is all about being the bigger and better person. I thought back to my past relationships and how I truly was the one giving my all when my partner didn’t even meet me halfway. It’s a horrible feeling, and what better way to deal with it than to belt it out over an upbeat guitar hook!”

Also added to the playlist this week is “Flippin’ Stomp” the latest single from Melbourne’s The Gnomes. The accompanying music video is inspired by classic early clips from the Beatles and the Monkees; and once you’ve heard The Gnomes it’ll all start to make sense.  It’s fast, it’s frenetic and really captures that early Cavern Club energy; albeit filtered through some of the indie rock of the intervening decades. It’s retro, it’s fresh, and the band have been getting plenty of attention in the local Frankston scene. It’s a hell of a lot of fun too! The band’s self-titled debut is out November 7th with a launch show at The Brunswick Ballroom on November 14th. Tickets are on sale now.

“you” fromBrisbane’s Vinted Vineer is a love song showcasing a tantalising mix of psychedelic, shoegaze, alt-pop and indie. It’s beautifully put together, dreamy and uplifting. They are about to head out on an East Coast tour, kicking off on the 18th of October in Brisbane. Get your tickets HERE.

We also have “Tommy is a Heartbreaker”, the gritty new single from Montreal rocker Jesse Creatchman. It’s raw, fast, and full of attitude and delivered with swagger and style. And, finally, “Delicious Delights” the latest from Sam Wrangle which we premiered earlier in the week.
