We Have High Hopes For Role Model’s New Era Of Music

Bruce Springsteen gives teary dedication at new Monmouth U center

For the penultimate time this month we’ve updated our Discovery playlist on Spotify and Apple Music with ten more tracks of the best new music from Australia and the world; including two tracks we exclusively premiered earlier in the week. Perth alt-country artist Harry Foxton is our Track of the Week with his new single “Seen The Dark”.

Produced by the award-winning Dylan Ollivierre, “Seen The Dark” follows a young couple riding through life’s darkness together, hoping to one day venture into the light. According to Foxton, “Seen The Dark reflects on the importance of momentum through life’s hardships. We don’t often see the light without witnessing the dark. The importance for me with this song is the constant belief that tomorrow will outshine the past.”

It’s upbeat, energetic and clearly rooted in a sense of optimism, and as such taps into those rock and roll tropes of redemption and striving for better. It’s almost Springsteeneque in its lyricism, though musically it’s quite reminiscent of recent War on Drugs, with a pulsating rhythm and some pleasing pedal steel courtesy of Jy Perry-Banks. It’s a charming and engaging slice of country-tinged indie rock; and luckily for us, it’s just the start. And there’s more on the way with Fear & Forgiveness, a full length album set to drop early 2026. Also, there’s a fun music video to accompany the track featuring Foxton in front of fifty different doorways across historic East and Central Fremantle. Be sure to check it out when it drops.

Get to know London 3-piece bar italia ahead of their upcoming tour to Australia via this week’s new single “Fundraiser”. They are known for their genre-shifting across indie rock, post-punk, shoegaze, and lo-fi pop. The track is a charismatic, sultry lo-fi banger full of hooks. They’ve announced their new album, Some Like It Hot, will be released on 17th October. You can catch them at the sold-out Meredith Music Festival, and headline shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane in early December. Head to mistletone.net for ticket details.

Melbourne trio Telenova dropped a surprise EP this week, BITCRUSH – with three new tracks. The title-track has a darkness to it, as well as inherent beauty, and as always the vocals of Angeline Armstrong are stunning. It’s taken inspiration from UK big-beat, garage, and trip-hop. You can catch them in Sydney on the 11th September at the Oxford Art Factory and at The Night Cat in Melbourne on the 13th September. Head HERE for tickets.

“Even When I’m Leaving” is the debut single from Naarm/Melbourne duo Wishlist – producers and long time collaborators Stella Farnan and Soren Maryasin. Written and recorded in a secluded studio on the outskirts of the city, there’s a closeness and intimacy to “Even When I’m Leaving”. It’s one of those tracks that is layered in juxtapositions – one the one hand it’s quite calm, quiet and considered, but on the other there’s a real sense of energy and momentum to it. The duo also find this lovely balance between structure and fracture, and restlessness and elegance. It all makes for a captivating listen.

Keeping things Naarm we also have “Severe Clear” the new single from singer-songwriter Emily Ulman. It’s the title track from her forthcoming new album which is all set for release on October 10th, and it’s just beautiful. Channelling a poignant optimism, “Severe Clear”, is according to Ulman ‘a song about the moments that arrive after everything has settled. It’s about clarity that is so beautiful it is almost unbearable.’ Folk adjacent, “Severe Clear” is bright and brimming with a quiet optimism; all delivered with real warmth and charm.

Also added to the playlist this week is “put yourself down”, the sophomore single from Stockholm band isobel – it’s being billed as ‘MJ Lenderman meets Neil Young in a ten-square-meter flat without any daylight’, so make of that what you will. Then we also have “Turn This Love Around” from Melbourne disco-funk ten piece Mondo Freaks, featuring vocals from Jade McRae.

“Lovers Song” from Molly Millington captures fabulously the full flush of early love. It’s a joyous, upbeat, unabashed celebration – more please! We’ve also added premieres from House of Strangers (“Many Faces”) and Rosy Nolan (“How It Feels To Fall In Love”).
