Olivia Rodrigo’s Newest Song Breaks A Longstanding Tradition

Best Australian and New Zealand Music of the Week: BOY SODA, WHO SHOT SCOTT, Inertia and More

This week we’ve added another ten tracks to our Discovery Playlist on Spotify and Apple Music, including one track we exclusively premiered earlier in the week. For the final time this month, our Track of the Week goes to, none other than the returning  Tkay Maidza with her new single “Must Be” – her first official solo release since 2023’s Sweet Justice.

With production coming courtesy of Maths Time Joy and The Idiot; “Must Be” is a bold, defiant statement of intent and independence from the now LA-based artist. It’s all sharp edges, chaos and confrontation; and there’s this really bright, heightened, slightly cartoonish, slightly ‘sinister’ vibe too. It’s ambitious, it’s bold, and pretty captivating. The press release promises the start of a new era – so expect to see and hear more from Maidza over the coming months – but, for now, sit back and strap in.

Naarm’s Gypsy Lee delivers “Snitches”, a moody, bold, and defiant indie-pop cut that immediately commands attention. Driven entirely by vocals and percussive elements — think handclaps and even door slams — the track strips things back to striking effect, placing her voice front and centre. Written alongside collaborator and producer THRONES (Andrew Lowden), “Snitches” captures the emotional aftermath of a first heartbreak, but channels it into something far more powerful: an anthemic, self-assured statement that refuses to be diminished. You can catch Gypsy across a run of Melbourne shows before she heads out to the Big Red Bash in the Simpson Desert; head HERE for all the dates.

Also added to the playlist this week is “White Limousine”, the new single from LA songwriter and artist Johanna Samuels. Produced by Jonathan Rado “White Limousine” is Samuels’ first new music since 2024, and features vocals from Courtney Marie Andrews. Influenced by Samuels’ first ever panic attack, “White Limousine” is this beautiful, piano driven track – lushly orchestrated, lyrically astute – and with some gorgeous vocals and harmonies from both women. Special mention for the guitar work throughout too, which really brings an added nostalgic element to bear on the track.

Emma Louise returns with “God Between Us”, a luminous and deeply introspective preview of her forthcoming fourth album Sunshine for Happiness, arriving May 1. Fresh off her collaborative record Dumb with Flume, the new single finds the singer-songwriter leaning into rich piano and expansive, ethereal instrumentation, framing a song that sits at the emotional and spiritual heart of the record. Balancing vulnerability with a sense of transcendence, “God Between Us” reflects on love as a constant — present in both creation and destruction — delivered with a quiet intensity that is most catching. It draws parallels with the great Nick Cave.

“That’s How I Pray” is the sublime new single from Vika & Linda, and the next taste of their forthcoming album Where Do You Come From? (Out June 5th). Co-written by Vika at a songwriting workshop at Whitsunday Islands, “That’s How I Pray” is inspired by the duo’s deep, personal connection to the water and the ocean. It’ll come as no surprise to those familiar with the duo, the vocals on “That’s How I Pray” are immaculate – a beautiful blend of gospel and soul, that just washes over you. By popular demand the duo have announced an extension of their national tour; for more information and to grab yourself tickets visit their website.

London-based alt-pop newcomers, The Deadmans, continue to build out their immersive creative world with “Make Me Prey”, the latest single from their forthcoming self-titled debut album, arriving April 24. Written across Paris, London, Brooklyn, Los Angeles and our very own Brunswick Heads, the track is a sharp, defiant statement — drawing on biting, self-assured lyricism that flips expectations of femininity and control into something far more feral and empowering. Lines like “you can’t make a predator, prey” land with real intent, underscoring the song’s core message of autonomy and unapologetic ambition.

Rum Jungle return with “Lowlife”, a raw and introspective new cut that finds the band turning inward, exploring self-worth, uncertainty and the slow process of learning to feel comfortable in your own skin. It also marks the next taste of their forthcoming second album Marginalia (out June 5), showcasing the development of a band intent on flexing their creative muscle. We caught them at The Great Escape in Brighton last year, and it’s exciting to hear the latest chapter from a band very much on the rise.

Also added to the playlist this week are “Tractor Beam”, the opening track from Snail Mail’s new album Ricochet, which is out today. Anthemic vocals, jangly guitars and soaring strings all combine on this ode to dissociation. “Please Let Me Remember This”, is the sophomore solo single from Sunflower Bean’s Julia Cumming. This soulful, shimmering and breezy track comes from Cummings’ forthcoming solo record Julia – out April 24th. Finally, we’ve also added “Fall of Man” from EDIE, which we premiered earlier in the week.
