‘In Calico’ is the latest and third offering from Limerick band, Neptune Blood. Recorded with producer Ben Wanders (Kneecap, The Scratch, Kingfishr) at Wanderland Recording Studio, Limerick. Neptune Blood consists of Ronan Mitchell, Morgan Nolan, Manolis Pates, Shane Serrano, Kieran J. Sims and Damien Moore, formerly of such Limerick stalwarts as Fox Jaw and The Hip Neck Blues Collective.
‘In Calico’ is a sun drenched indie banger serving as a soundtrack for clinging to the season’s final moments—the sweat, rising heat from concrete, and those endless evenings one wishes would never fade.
However, the track extends beyond mere nostalgia. Singer Ronan Mitchell explains that ‘In Calico’ explores “the feeling of being at a point in your life where you’re looking back nostalgically on parts of your life, while still having a lot to look forward to.”
While recalling his younger days, Mitchell continues to explain that the line about ‘Reet Petite’ refers to the 1958 Jackie Wilson song. “One of my earliest, most visceral memories is of the claymation video to that song and how it terrified me. I couldn’t even walk yet but whenever it came on the TV I’d scurry behind the couch to hide from it. I still find it kind of unsettling now, if I’m honest.”
The music video is also a gem directed by Darragh O’Flannagáin. It compliments the song with similar nostalgic vibes, following the relationship of a child and his bike. From licking his wounds, to facing his fears, and building himself the fastest bike in town.
