New music from Highly Suspect, Social Distortion, Avery Anna, Thirty Seconds to Mars and Yungblud

Welcome to New Music Monday. As we kick off a brand new week, don’t forget that the clocks have officially shifted forward, stealing an hour of sleep but giving us a little more sunlight to enjoy. That extra evening glow is a welcome sign that spring is just around the corner, and today’s lineup is the perfect soundtrack for the changing season.

Highly Suspect – Yellow Roses

Highly Suspect is back with their latest single, “Yellow Roses,” a track that marks a significant shift for the band. After years of major label deals, frontman Johnny Stevens recently announced that the group is now fully independent. The song itself leans into a 90s grunge aesthetic, blending raw, distorted guitars with Stevens’ signature grit. It’s a song about the heavy realization that a long-term relationship has run its course, written during a period of transition and personal reflection.

Social Distortion – Born to Kill

After a fifteen-year wait and a courageous battle with tonsil cancer by frontman Mike Ness, Social Distortion has finally returned with “Born to Kill.” This title track from their upcoming album is a high-octane punk anthem that feels like a homecoming for longtime fans. Ness describes the new music as a mix of “fury, joy, and catharsis.” The song pays direct homage to rock legends like Lou Reed and Iggy Pop, proving that while the band has faced immense challenges, their rebellious spirit and signature “Orange County” sound are as sharp as ever.

Avery Anna – Man Downstairs

Avery Anna continues her rise in the alt-country and pop-emo scene with her biting new track, “Man Downstairs.” Released just over a week ago, the song is a departure from her more vulnerable ballads, trading sadness for a sharp, tongue-in-cheek “good riddance.” The lyrics tell the story of a “lovesick girl” who realizes she was the target of a “perfect crime” by a pathological liar. It’s an empowering anthem about standing up for yourself, served with a side of dark humor and a warning that the “man downstairs” is waiting for those who do wrong.

Thirty Seconds to Mars – Over My Head

is keeping the momentum going with “Over My Head,” a track that Jared Leto says captures the current state of the world. Moving away from the massive, stadium-sized anthems of their past, this song focuses on a more intimate, “brutal honesty.” It explores the feeling of being overwhelmed by the chaos of modern life while still searching for a glimmer of hope. The band is also currently celebrating the 20th anniversary of their breakout work, making this a season of both looking back and pushing forward into new sonic territory.

Yungblud – Zombie

Finally, Yungblud’s “Zombie” has taken on a life of its own as a powerful tribute to frontline workers. Originally written about the heartbreaking experience of watching his grandmother deteriorate after an injury, the song evolved into a “love letter to nurses.” The accompanying music video, starring Florence Pugh, vividly portrays the physical and emotional burnout of healthcare staff. By using his platform to highlight “unsung heroes,” Yungblud has turned a song about feeling numb into a massive anthem for empathy and recognition.

That wraps up our look at the fresh tracks hitting the airwaves this week. Enjoy that extra hour of daylight this evening, and keep an ear out for the sounds of spring—it’s closer than you think.
