New Orleans theater shows this weekend: A Christmas Carol | Entertainment/Life

Good tidings come to and from local theaters this week as holiday happenings get closer and closer.

A ‘carol’ for another Christmas

Fans of Crescent City Stage will get the chance to delve into Dickens on Dec. 11 when the local acting company stages a one-night-only reading of the popular “A Christmas Carol” adaptation by Patrick Barlow.

“While not our previously planned full production, this is a chance to still gather and celebrate the holidays together, and at the same time, invest in the future of professional theater in New Orleans,” said Crescent City Stages’ Scrooge, Michael A. Newcomer.

“We are beyond thrilled to share this story at The Josephine and to support the artists and programs that we have become known for,” noted the producing executive director.

For two seasons, the company has presented the classic yuletide tale of Ebenezer Scrooge and a host of other characters played by four professional actors. The reading will include Erin Cessna, Eleanor Frederic-Humphrey, Ryan Reilly and Jarrod Smith. Elizabeth Elkins Newcomer will direct, and the projections, an integral part of the production, will be designed by James Lanius.

The Josephine, at 2400 Napoleon Ave., will be the spot for the reading and will include a cash bar, small bites and a post-show celebration with the cast.

Tickets, which will help fund Crescent City’s season and studio programming, start at $54. Visit crescentcitystage.com

What happens when Santa misses a mouse’s house?

Find out when Playmakers Theater puts the daze in holidays for “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” running Nov. 29 to Dec. 14 at the Covington playhouse.

The story involves a mouse, an elf and a little girl who won’t take no for an answer, written by Ken Lugwig and directed by Shelley Meier.

Taking part in the show are Tom Hassinger, Solie Meier, Brook Wortmann, Harper Jarrell, Olivia Mejia, Derek Thrush and Ken Richard.

“The show is hilarious and charming,” said Meier. “It has all the feel-good Christmas spirit with some unexpected rap battles, a daring sword fight and mistaken identities. Shakespeare himself would be proud of this production.”

The show runs at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays at 19106 Playmakers Road, Covington. Tickets start at $23. Visit playmakersinc.com.
