A new public space is in the works for downtown Rochester, known as Main Street Commons, located at 170-172 East Main Street.
More than $1.5 million will help to finance the project, which will transform a currently vacant commercial building into an outdoor public space for dining and entertainment.
The Rochester City Council approved legislation Tuesday night approving the issuance of bonds and contracting for construction at the site.
According to the city, the project will “create a new outdoor public space as a catalyst to facilitate the renovation of the Main Street corridor and to support the development of the adjacent private properties into mixed-use destinations. The Commons will provide space for outdoor dining and small-scale entertainment while simultaneously providing enhanced pedestrian circulation within the district.”
The funding came from a grant as part of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI).
