McCartney sings about a city filled with “smoky bars and cheap guitars”, while his childhood home at Forthlin Road is where he and John Lennon “met” and “wrote a secret code”. He foreshadows the different paths that he and most of his friends took with the line “Some of [the boys] will feel the pain / But some were meant for more”.
Although sung a few octaves higher, what Days We Left Behind actually brings to mind is Johnny Cash’s late-career American Recordings series of albums. Like them, this is stripped-back, reflective, twilight-of-life music, and it’s all the more moving for it.
The single will be followed in May by The Boys of Dungeon Lane, McCartney’s first album since 2020. Like the single, the album reflects Macca’s life before Beatlemania changed everything. Dungeon Lane was a popular spot next to the Mersey where McCartney and pals would birdwatch and hang out; it now borders Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport.
