The millennial role model that is Hilary Duff has returned to music with her new single “Mature.” It’s Duff’s first song in a decade, with her last album, “Breathe In. Breathe Out.” being released in June 2015. Duff also surprised fans by announcing that she would be doing four live performances as part of the “Small rooms, big nerves” tour happening at the end of January. The tour will kick off in London on Jan. 19, stop in Toronto on Jan. 24, visit Brooklyn on Jan. 27, and end in Los Angeles at the Wiltern on Jan. 29.

Fans can sign up for Duff’s presale through Ticketmaster by Nov. 12 at 11 p.m. PT. Presale tickets go on sale on Nov. 14 at 10 a.m. local time and general sale starts on the same day at 3 p.m. local time.

Duff also announced that she would be using Ticketmaster’s Face Value Exchange program, meaning tickets would be non-transferable and could only be resold at their original price on Ticketmaster, in an effort to prevent inflated resale prices. Tickets for the concerts will likely be in high demand due to the limited number of shows and fan demand, as Duff hasn’t toured since 2008’s “Dignity” Tour.

Duff’s quick tour announcement came as a surprise to fans who were still enjoying Duff’s new single “Mature.”

“She’s me, I’m her in a different font,” the song begins as Duff paints the piece’s tone. “Just a few years younger, a new haircut. Very Leo of you with your Scorpio touch.”

The theme of the song is Duff talking to her younger self, and the lyrics seem to reflect on an age-gap relationship she now looks back on differently. It’s in the catchy chorus that Duff notes on how being called “mature for your age” can feel like a compliment when you’re young, but as you get older, it has a new meaning.

“She looks like all of your girls but blonder.

A little like me just younger.

Bet she loves when she hears you say.

You’re so mature for your age, babe.

She looks like she could be your daughter.

Like me before I got smarter.

When I was flattered to hear you say.

You’re so mature for your age, babe.”

While Duff hasn’t specified where the inspiration for this song comes from, the “Younger” star was in an age-gap relationship in her late teens, dating Good Charlotte singer Joel Madden, who was 8 years her senior.

Duff co-wrote “Mature” with Madison Love and her husband, Matthew Koma, who is also a musician in the band “Winnetka Bowling League.”

The music video for “Mature” also includes a special homage to the fans who have followed her career since the beginning. At the end of the video, Duff is seen leaving a theatre. Once she’s outside, she opens up her hands and a butterfly emerges, a nod to her first album, “Metamorphosis.” As it flies away, she nods and moves forward as the screen fades to black, symbolizing a new chapter for the “Lizzie McGuire” darling.

Duff began teasing new music earlier this year, following the anniversary of her debut album. In an Instagram post, she reflected on what that time in her life meant to her, ending with “To be continued…” Two weeks later, she shared a series of photos of her in the recording studio with the caption “new music … or something.” Duff finally confirmed her new song “Mature” just a few days before its Nov. 6 release.

Since dropping the single and music video, fans have been taking to social media to celebrate Duff’s return to pop. Hilary Duff began trending on Threads with over 7k posts about the singer.

“Hilary Duff made a modern song with a nostalgic flair. Didn’t try to cater only to the younger generation. And it’s over 3 minutes. Millennials- We are so back !” shared creator Just Me Rod.

“HILARY DUFF HAS RETURNED TO SAVE POP MUSIC!!” shared another user.

Hilary Duff was also the season finale guest on the popular podcast “Therapuss,” hosted by Jake Shane. In the interview, Duff chatted about her career and teased that she would be performing one of her biggest hits from the “Lizzie McGuire Movie,” “This is What Dreams Are Made Of,” on a potential tour.

“So when you did your tour, you were doing ‘Metamorphosis,’ you were just doing songs from that album?” asks Shane.

After nodding to confirm, Duff elaborates, “but if I would ever tour again…”

“Don’t play with me,” Shane interrupts, speaking on behalf of the viewers waiting on the edge of their seats for a tour announcement.

Duff continues, “I think, maybe, I would be allowed to manage to sing that song somehow, someway. You know, just maybe, like hypothetically.”

While “Mature” marks the return of Duff’s music career, she has been booked and busy over the past 10 years. She starred in TVLand’s “Younger” as Kelsey Peters from 2015 to 2021 alongside Sutton Foster and Debi Mazar. During this time, Duff also dipped her toe into music, releasing a cover of “Little Lies” for the show in 2016, a fitting song choice for the series.

A few years later, she was slated to reprise her role in Lizzie McGuire with a reboot on Disney+, but the project was shelved after creative differences between the series creator, Terri Minsky, and Disney.

Instead, Duff starred in the “How I Met Your Mother” Hulu spin-off “How I Met Your Father” as Sophie Tompkins. Despite the show being a hit in its first season, which led to twice as many episodes for season 2, the series was cancelled in 2023 amid the ongoing actors’ and writers’ strikes in Hollywood. Fans were left disappointed, not knowing who the Father would be, and also because it meant Duff wouldn’t be on their screen for the foreseeable future.
