New Stargate Series Announced And It’s Worth The 14 Year Wait

24 years after the sudden cancellation of Stargate Universe, the beloved sci-fi franchise is coming back thanks to Amazon. The mega-corp acquired the rights to the entire franchise when it bought out MGM in 2022, and ever since, there’ve been rumblings of a new series coming to Amazon Prime Video. Today, it was confirmed, and Stargate is coming back as a streaming series that’s being touted as its own entry in the franchise, with the new showrunner, Martin Gero, saying point-blank, “It’s not a reboot.” Long-suffering fans have waited decades for more of the hit franchise, and the rest of the news today proves that the wait was worth it.

The Original Stargate Creative Team Is Back

First off, it’s the fact that Martin Gero is the new showrunner. Gero got his start in Hollywood on Stargate Atlantis and would go on to write episodes for every series in the franchise, direct the Atlantis episode “Brain Storm,” and even serve as a creative consultant for the back half of Stargate SG-1. If anyone were to bring back the franchise, it should be someone who helped bring it to life in the first place, which is why it’s especially impressive that Gero’s not the only one returning to Stargate Command.

Before SG-1, Stargate was a blockbuster action sci-fi movie directed by Roland Emmerich, and now, 31 years after he opened the gate for the first time, Emmerich is back for the Amazon series. Joining him is his long-time collaborator Dean Devlin, who not only worked on the original movie but has gone on to craft a generation of fun, light-hearted cable shows, including Leverage and The Librarians. If anyone will get the unique tone of Stargate right, it will be those three.

Even then, they aren’t alone. Brad Wright, co-creator of the Stargate television universe, is on board as a consultant, and during Amazon’s event, he explained that his goal is to do things they couldn’t do in 1997. He echoed Gero’s enthusiastic statement that the new show won’t rely on 350 episodes of accumulated knowledge, but can be enjoyed fresh, and then, he hopes, everyone will want to go back and watch the franchise from the beginning.

The Possibilities Are Endless

Beyond the creative team, little is known about Amazon’s new Stargate series. Will it provide closure for the Destiny’s crew from Stargate Universe? Are we going back to Atlantis and the Wraiths? Will we get to see the Stargate Command officers again, and after all these years, will we meet General Samantha Carter? Most importantly, will every planet look like Vancouver?

Given how each of the shows ended, there’s plenty for the new series to develop, even if it will be an entry point for newcomers. The Goa’uld and Ori stories ended in the direct-to-DVD movies, Continuum and Ark of Truth, but who’s to say another system lord hasn’t popped up in the ensuing years? Stargate Universe revealed more about The Ancients, and who knows what technology is out there, waiting to fall into the wrong hands.

Stargate fans have plenty to speculate about as the new series is still early in development, and there’s no release date. There’s no cast, no setting, and no characters, but none of that matters, because finally, 14 years after the franchise went dormant, fans can celebrate. Stargate is back.
