Brad Lander is the New York City comptroller – essentially the city’s independently-elected chief financial officer. The city’s public pension funds are under his wing; those funds include investments in Spotify.
That has now spurred Lander to write to CEO Daniel Ek with some questions about the recent controversy over Spotify running recruitment ads from the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency.
“From a fiduciary perspective, I am concerned about the reputational risks these ads may create for the company, which could hamper long-term growth, and want to better understand how the company assessed these ads against the company’s stated advertising policies,” wrote Lander in his letter.
It includes six questions about the processes around accepting the ads; the impact of the criticism on Spotify’s business; and how the company is “engaging with artists, labels, and users to restore trust and reinforce the company’s commitment to inclusivity and responsible advertising”.
Lander, a progressive Democrat, has taken a prominent stance against recent ICE raids – including being arrested for it.
