Nine Inch Nails is working on new music. This marks a shift in priorities for the industrial rockers following a lengthy stint in which frontman and founder Trent Reznor focused primarily on film scores, Consequence reports.
Reznor, 60, revealed the band’s return to the studio in comments made as part of Consequence’s 2025 Live Act of the Year honor. The band’s recent and critically acclaimed “Peel It Back” tour — which kicked off in June and runs through March — and work on the “TRON: Ares” soundtrack reignited the creative spark for new material.
“We are working on new stuff and we’re excited to work on it, and we are prioritizing working on Nine Inch Nails over just taking on every single thing that comes up in the other category,” Reznor said.
“So, beyond that, I can’t say much, but the difference between now and a year ago is the fuse has been lit and the desire is there.”
The announcement comes after Reznor previously explained that he had been focusing on film work due to his longstanding frustration with the state of the music industry.
“The culture of the music world sucks,” Reznor explained. “What technology has done to disrupt the music business in terms of not only how people listen to music but the value they place on it is defeating.”
He added that music now “feels largely relegated to something that happens in the background or while you’re doing something else.”
Reznor has built an extensive award-winning film scoring catalog since producing the soundtrack for 1994’s “Natural Born Killers.”
Alongside bandmate and songwriting partner Atticus Ross, he has scored films including “The Social Network,” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” “Gone Girl,” “Challengers.”
The duo nabbed Oscars and Golden Globes for their work on “The Social Network” in 2010 and the animated movie “Soul” in 2020.
Nine Inch Nails’ last studio album that wasn’t a soundtrack was 2020’s “Ghosts V: Together” and its counterpart “Ghosts VI: Locusts.” Further details on when new material may be released have yet to been revealed.
