K-pop girl group NMIXX is releasing its fifth mini-album “Heavy Serenade” Monday evening, seven months after its first full-length album “Blue Valentine” topped major domestic streaming charts and swept 10 music show wins.
The six-track album centers on the theme of love, with the title track written by rising singer-songwriter Hanroro. The song blends electronic music elements — trance, acid and drum and bass — into pop, a genre the group calls “mix pop.”
The remaining tracks include “LOUD,” solely written by member Lily, and “Different Girl” and “Superior,” co-written by member Bae.
In a written Q&A released through JYP Entertainment, the members described the album’s title as intentional contrast.
“People tend to think of ‘heavy’ as a negative emotion, but we wanted to express that the heavier the love, the more important and overwhelming it is,” Lily said.
Member Haewon, meanwhile, described the group’s voices as “chameleon vocals that suit any genre,” saying she hopes more listeners will recognize that quality.
On the pressure of following a career high, group member Sullyoon acknowledged the weight but said it served as motivation.
She suggested “Heavy Serenade” could double as a wedding song given how love-filled it is. Gyujin said the goal this time is to prove “there are no limits to NMIXX’s growth” and deliver music show wins and a chart No. 1 to fans.
The group also reflected on recent performances at major Latin American festivals, including the Sao Paulo Carnival and the Vina del Mar Festival in Chile, where they performed to massive crowds.
“Even with a setlist of more than 15 songs, I wasn’t tired at all — I felt energized,” Gyujin said.
The group also debuted a Spanish-language collaboration, “TIC TIC” featuring local artist Pablo Vittar, at during their performance in Sao Paulo.
NMIXX’s ongoing world tour “Episode 1: Zero Frontier,” which launched with a sold-out show at Inspire Arena in Incheon last November, moves to Asia in June.
