Another popular crime case is heading to the television screen in a new series.
Elizabeth Banks will play Karen Read in an upcoming limited Prime Video series about a Massachusetts case that garnered attention from across the country, Deadline reported.
Banks will serve as executive director for the project with her producing partner, Max Handelman, and Krissy Wall, the outlet said. Banks grew up in Pittsfield, according to Berkshire Magazine.
The series will be based on the Law & Crime and Wondery podcast “Karen,” following the trial that made Read a “household name.”
“When a Boston police officer is found dead in the snow, all eyes are on his girlfriend, Karen Read,” Deadline wrote. “Fracturing a community, some believe she is guilty of first-degree murder, but others believe she’s the victim of a sweeping cover-up by state and local law enforcement.”
The outlet noted the series explores society’s obsession with true crime, allure to conspiracy and the deepening crisis of trust in institutions.
Banks has previously worked with Prime Video, starring in the hit series “The Better Sister.” Other acting credits include “The Hunger Games,” “The LEGO Movie,” “Pitch Perfect,” and “The 40-Year-Old Virgin.”
