October 5, 1928- Memorial Union opens on UW-Madison campus

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – On this day, October 5, 1928, Memorial Union opened on UW-Madison’s campus.

The Memorial Union was the first union to serve beer at a public university, according to the Memorial Union.

The journey to open the now-iconic location started about 20 years before opening in 1928. A committee was formed, and after about 10 years of planning, fundraising and construction, the Memorial Union and Memorial Terrace finally opened.

Opening weekend was filled with food, music and fun, all dedicated to the men and women of the University who had served in wars.

The first wedding at the Terrace was held one year after opening, 1929.

The so-called “Living Room of Campus” is on Langdon Street.
