Olivia Colman hates sex scenes because she feels like she is “being unfaithful” to her husband.
The 51-year-old actress – who has three children with spouse Ed Sinclair – admitted she feels uncomfortable when she is asked to bare her flesh on screen or to get very close to another actor.
After her The Roses co-star Benedict Cumberbatch had asked what “scares” Olivia about her job, she said on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast: “Anything where I have to show any skin, I don’t like. Pretending to have sex… I don’t like it. I feel like I’m being unfaithful.
“Even when they go, ‘You can wear your jeans,’ or a cushion between you. I don’t want to do that. I don’t want to do that.”
But Olivia and Amy praised the actors who are at ease with such scenes.
The host said: “The people that are good at it, I’ll watch them all day long, and they’re comfy. But the on-screen orgasm…”
Her guest added: “No, absolutely not… Thank God for intimacy coordinators.”
The former Crown actress gushed over her marriage to her “best friend”.
She said: “He’s my best friend and I fancy him, which is quite nice.
“It is our 25th wedding anniversary next year. We aren’t big fighters, which apparently isn’t very healthy.”
Olivia enjoyed working with her friend Benedict on The Roses but admitted she had to offer him reassurance during the more “cruel” scenes between their characters, a couple whose marriage is falling apart.
She said: “We had so much fun, but when it started to get a little bit more cruel to each other, he did go, ‘Can we pause for a minute? Are we OK?’ ‘Yes, Ben, it’s all pretend. It’s all OK.’ He’s so in it. It’s just lovely, but I felt like I wanted to hold his hand a lot and go, ‘We’re good.’ “
Olivia previously admitted she always makes sure she puts her husband and their children before her career aspirations.
She told My Weekly magazine: “My family is everything to me. I love my children so much. I love them more than anything in the world.
“As much as I love acting, I never want to miss out on their lives. Nothing comes before them. I work to make sure we are secure, but they are always my first thought.”
