The Golden Globes kicked off Hollywood’s awards season on Sunday by honoring the best artistic works in film, television and even, for the first time, podcasts. Nikki Glaser returned as host for the second year in a row.
The show’s unique format, which splits movies and TV shows into separate drama and comedy/musical categories, means that some of the year’s most celebrated works weren’t in direct competition with each other.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another was the clear standout in the comedy/musical film categories, winning Best Picture, plus writing and directing awards for Anderson. Teyana Taylor was also named Best Supporting Female Actor for her work in the film.
In the drama categories, Hamnet was named Best Picture and also earned Jessie Buckley a Golden Globe for Best Female Actor. The biggest upset winner of the night was Wagner Moura, who was named Best Male Actor in a drama for his work in the Brazilian film The Secret Agent.
On the TV side, Adolescence continued its dominant run from last year’s Emmys by sweeping all four of the limited series categories it was nominated for, winning Best Limited Series plus acting nods for Owen Cooper, Erin Doherty and Stephen Graham.
Among other notable winners, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners was honored for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. KPop Demon Hunters won Best Animated Motion Picture and Best Song. Good Hang With Amy Poehler won the inaugural Best Podcast award.
