HASTINGS, Minn. — The Rochester Royals jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning here Sunday, but the Hastings Hawks controlled much of the rest of the amateur baseball game, as the Royals fell 8-5.
Rochester’s first three batters of the game reached base, with Sam Graunke driving in Nick Pearson for the first run of the game.
Hastings tied it in the bottom of the second, then took the lead for good with a five-run fourth. The Hawks sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning, scored five runs on five hits and two walks, and stranded the bases loaded.
The Royals pulled within two, 6-4, with a three-run sixth, but they’d come no closer.
Pearson, Graunke and Hayden Brown had two hits each in the loss.
Starter Kasey Carlson went 6⅓ innings and suffered the loss. Brayden Kottschade and Aaron Terpstra covered the final 1⅔ innings without allowing a run.
The Royals are back in action at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Cannon Falls.
