After plans for it were first announced in early 2025 an opening date for Freight Island in Newcastle has been announced
It will be THE biggest opening in Newcastle this year for sure and, over 12 months since plans for it were first announced, an opening date for huge new rooftop entertainment complex Freight Island has been announced. And the even better news is that it’s not far away at all!
It was back in February 2025 that ChronicleLive first reported on plans for food, drink, gaming and music experience Freight Island to open in the upper floor and rooftop space of what used to be the massive Debenhams store in Eldon Square, which has since been taken over by the new Next, which opened in July last year. Taking inspiration from New York’s famous theme park Coney Island, the whopping 60,000sqft it is set to become the largest food, drink and entertainment venue in a UK city centre, marking a big first for Newcastle and following in the footsteps of Freight Island’s success in Manchester.
And now we know just when the Newcastle Freight Island will be open, after an Instagram post on Monday evening revealed that it’s all looking good for it to launch in June 2026. A short behind the scenes clip was accompanied by the caption: ‘Opening June 2026. An island above the city with your favourite DJs, world-class food and drinks for days.’
The post quickly got plenty of comments, include one from someone delighted it should be open ‘in time for the World Cup’ as another follower of the Freight Island Newcastle account wrote: ‘Can’t wait for this, love the one in Manchester.’
The new venue will include a vibrant mix of family-friendly events, global street food during the day to DJ sets and live performances at night. Freight Island aims to serve up an extensive food and drink offering, with a selection of eateries and food traders, including a service-led restaurant overseen by an executive chef, global street food stalls, and a food hall with communal seating under a retractable roof.
A key feature will be the Music Box—a new venue for live music and touring acts, allowing Freight Island to host a variety of events, including corporate gatherings, art showcases, theatre, national festivals and international tours.
