The City of Orange Beach unanimously approved one-year extensions for two of its entertainment districts, maintaining current regulations surrounding alcohol consumption within these districts.

SanRoc Cay Marina and The Wharf have held their entertainment district designations since July 2012 and have been issued one-year extensions since, according to each resolution document.

Orange Beach’s Code of Ordinances reads in article VIII, section 50-554, patrons at establishments within an entertainment district may leave with open plastic containers of alcoholic beverages and consume said beverages anywhere within the district.

Bottles and glass containers are not to be removed from the licensed premises. Entering a district with open or closed containers of alcoholic beverages is prohibited.

As previously reported by GCM, Gov. Kay Ivey is having state alcohol laws reviewed after a mass shooting in downtown Montgomery on Oct. 4 left two people dead and 12 injured.

The ABC Board’s potential rule changes, pitched by Alabama ABC Administrator Curtis Stewart on Oct. 28, include banning package stores located inside entertainment districts from selling items that enable drinking outside, such as cups or ice. He also suggested limiting how much alcohol businesses with special retail licenses can sell for off-premises consumption.

Stewart wrote that the effort is aimed at improving safety statewide.

The Code of Alabama, Section 28-3A-17.1, currently outlines a similar set of laws to the Orange Beach Code of Ordinances.
