The San Diego Padres took another strong step toward becoming sellers at the deadline as they submitted another listless, poorly-pitched game against the Kansas City Royals that wound up being a 6-1 loss.

There wasn’t a lot to like in this one. Griffin Canning was the San Diego starter, and he was immediately victimized by Lane Thomas, who hit a two-run homer in the first inning as he continues to  menace the Padres in the series. Fernando Tatis Jr. got one run back in the third with a rare home run of his own, but the Royals quickly regained the lead off Canning, who had another rough go.

The run in the third came via an RBI double by Jac Caglianone double, and an RBI single by Isaac Collins in the fourth gave the Royals a 4-1 lead.

That was it for Canning, who gave up all four runs as part as an ugly overall line that inlcuded five hits and a pair of walks in 3-2/3 innings. Canning’s ERA is now 6.67, and it’s hard to imagine that the Padres will keep running him out to the mound for much longer.

Matt Waldron took over, and it didn’t take long for the Royals to extend their lead. Savador Perez did the honors with a two-run blast in the sixth to make it 6-1, and it was the 315th home run of his career as he drew to within two of George Brett, who is the Royals all-time home run leader at 317.

The Padres didn’t have much to offer after that as they were shut down by a series of Royals relievers with Daniel Lynch IV getting his third win of the season. It wasn’t hard to pinpoint the problem in this one, as Jackson Merrill, Xander Bogaerts, Manny Machado and Gavin Sheets combined to go 0-for-17, as the bottom of the lineup produced five singles to go with the Tatis homer.

The loss left the Padres 14 games out of first in the NL West, and they’re 3-1/2 games out of the wild card race. That means they’re technically in contention, but no one who’s watched this team for the last six weeks can believe they’re anything close to a playoff team.

The Padres will try and salvage a game in the series tomorrow as they send German Marquez to the mound against Noah Cameron for the Royals.
