  • Brewster told critic Shaelyn Scott “you suck” for writing an article critiquing the procedural’s transition from broadcast to streaming.

  • “I’m sorry to those who follow me that you saw me behave like that,” Brewster wrote on X after deleting the initial post. “Turns out, last night, I sucked.”

Paget Brewster is hoping to make amends with her followers after lashing out at the author of a feature that leveled criticism at Criminal Minds.

One of the long-running procedural’s most enduring stars called out ScreenRant senior writer Shealyn Scott by name in a social media post on Saturday, which linked to a feature published the same day that criticized several changes that have befallen the show after its transition from broadcast to streaming.

“Hello critic Shealynn Scott. You’re young. You don’t know that bad pics and bad reviews can lead to 350 people losing their jobs,” Brewster wrote in the now-deleted post (per Variety). “Sell vintage. Work at a shelter. Do something better than what you do now. Because right now you suck.”

The backlash to Brewster’s post was immediate.

Within 24 hours, Brewster had deleted the post and thrown up an apology.

“Hi guys, I was mean to Shealyn Scott last night and I profoundly regret it,” she wrote on the same platform on Sunday. “Shame on me for insulting a human being for doing their job. I’m very sorry, Shealyn. And I’m sorry to those who follow me that you saw me behave like that. Turns out, last night, I sucked.”

Entertainment Weekly has reached out to representatives for ScreenRant and Brewster for comment.

Despite Brewster characterizing Scott’s article in question as a review, it was actually a feature exploring how the series has changed after transitioning from broadcast to streaming.

The series wrapped after its 15th season on CBS in 2020, but was revived under the moniker Criminal Minds: Evolution on the network’s streaming arm, Paramount+, in 2022. Now in its fourth season since the change, Scott explored what was gained and what was lost, ultimately finding that the series has suffered more, especially as its per-season episode order has dropped from highs of 26 to just 10.

After receiving a good deal of pushback from fans and followers on her original post criticizing Scott, ScreenRant’s branding & PR director, Rob Keyes, shared several posts of his own clarifying misinterpretations of Scott’s work, and noting that he had touched base with Brewster, who apologized.

Later on Sunday, Scott also noted on X that “Paget also reached out privately to apologize to me! Criminal Minds is still one of my all-time favorite shows, and I’m very excited to continue covering s19 (and hopefully beyond!)”

Scott’s story only mentions Brewster once, when praising the show’s shift to streaming for enabling character’s like Brewster’s to issue the “occasional heated expletive.”
