Parent Teacher is the musical endeavor of NYC-based Richard Spitzer. A few weeks back, he announced his new album Tricks For Meds with the release of exceptionally titled lead single “Timeline Rabies.” Today he’s got another new track, “Narcissists,” which allows me a fresh opportunity to extend an endorsement.
Tricks For Meds is a great record. I’m not entirely sure where to situate its sound. There’s some Angel Du$t in the way Spitzer applies a punk edge to extremely poppy songs, and his voice reminds me of Enon’s John Schmersal doing his best Hotline TNT. I hear bits of grunge, power-pop, space-rock, post-punk, and pop-punk in there, and the music has an electronic streak despite its firm roots in guitar-based rock music. It’s catchy, sophisticated stuff with a clear point of view despite its myriad stylistic swerves.
These two singles only give you part of the picture, but it’s an enticing view through the window into a project that should be on your radar. Listen below.
