Someone get Sweden on the phone because it’s looking like Paul McCartney deserves serious Nobel Peace Prize consideration: At his concert in Los Angeles Sunday night, Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo were spotted together, chatting with friends. Well, potentially together, but certainly in very close quarters!!
In a series of grainy photos posted by DeuxMoi, Taylor and Olivia appear to be standing next to each other after the concert, having a nice time, not being awkward.
To be fair, two of pop music’s biggest artists simply being in each other’s presence would not usually warrant commenting, but there’s been tension between Taylor and Olivia for years now, so this proximity might be a sign that their relationship is warming back up. In case you need a refresher: In 2021, while promoting her debut album, Sour, Olivia talked about how “Deja Vu” was directly inspired by “Cruel Summer”; she later spoke about how she “interpolated” Taylor’s song “New Year’s Day” in “1 step forward, 3 steps back.” Taylor, Jack Antonoff, and St. Vincent were eventually given songwriter credits for “Deja Vu,” which was reported with a lot of positive spin but signaled that some awkward phone calls between the artists and/or their representatives had happened behind the scenes. (This did not help Taylor’s reputation as a shrewd-to-a-fault business woman, the epitome of someone getting their bag.)
Then, when Olivia’s second album dropped in 2023, fans speculated that at least two songs (including one called “The Grudge”…) were about the whole songwriting debacle.
Things were pretty quiet for a few years. But that this (potential) reunion comes six months after Taylor dropped The Life of a Showgirl is particularly interesting, given that “Father Figure,” one of the album’s best songs (in my opinion), was a pretty thinly veiled, defensive song about not fucking with her business acumen. (Taylor denied it and said the song was inspired by Logan Roy…OK.)
But maybe now that they’ve both gotten their shots in, Taylor and Olivia are on an even playing field and ready to make amends. Or maybe it was simply the magic of Paul McCartney’s lyricism that inspired them to bury the hatchet.
