Pharrell Williams faces fresh legal woes in explosive lawsuit from Chad Hugo
Pharrell Williams is once again facing a lawsuit from his longtime music partner and childhood friend, Chad Hugo.
According to Billboard, Hugo, 51, has taken legal action against Williams, 52, alleging breach of fiduciary duty and failure to properly account for royalties in a lawsuit filed on Friday, January 23.
Hugo, who co-founded the famous production group The Neptunes with Williams, says he has been cut off from their shared economic interests because of a dispute over royalties.
Court documents state that he is owed at least $1 million in royalties from N.E.R.D.’s 2017 album No One Ever Really Dies, which featured the hit track Lemon with Rihanna.
Hugo further alleged that Williams kept financial documents and money owed to him, a move his attorney described as dishonest and one that requires court involvement.
The lawsuit also mentions previous legal disputes between the two, including a 2024 case over control of The Neptunes’ name.
For more than 25 years, The Neptunes and N.E.R.D. have contributed significantly to the music industry, delivering hits for stars including Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, and Gwen Stefani.
Hugo has requested that the court clarify their rights and make sure he is paid the royalties he believes are owed to him.
Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo are said to have cut off all contact following the 2024 legal case.
