ABC Classic 100: Greatest of All Time — by the numbers

There wasn’t a soul in metal media – or even alternative media – that wasn’t talking, posting, or writing about the teaser that Poppy, Spiritbox‘s Courtney LaPlante, and Evanescence‘s Amy Lee collectively posted to their social medias last Thursday (August 28th). And while each teaser was slightly different and featured each vocalist in different ways, the message was still the same. Three of the biggest names in modern metal were releasing a brand new single, “End Of You,” the following week, September 4th.

In less than two days, the music video has racked up almost two million views. The video itself features LaPlante, Lee, and Poppy in various rooms in the castle; Lee donned in all black amidst tarnished ruins, Poppy dressed in all white in a frozen landscape in a ballroom, and LaPlante feels like a mirror of both as she’s dressed in black but the room around her glows green. Throughout the video, there’s a masked figure that’s filming the trio before the group eventually gains control over the filming the process and flips the script.

The three chatted to NME‘s Rishi Shah about the collaboration with Poppy saying that “End Of You” was “just” “for now,” but the fact that Poppy said “for now” alludes to further material, which she backs up with, “It feels like people are ready for it. I feel like it’s the start of something.”

Lee added that it felt like they were “all in a band together” and were in the phase of “‘What fun things can we do together?'”

While working on Negative Spaces, Poppy and ex-Bring Me The Horizon member and producer Jordan Fish had the idea of “End Of You” and having it as a collaboration, specifically with Amy Lee in hopes of creating their own “version of a dark Moulin Rouge, like “Lady Marmalade”?” The idea seemed feasible, especially since Lee had been working with Fish at the time before he ended up suggesting not only a collaboration between Lee and Poppy, but LaPlante as well. Lee said it was, “literally the concept of ‘Let’s just get us all together,’ that started the song,”

Altogether, beyond the vocals provided by the three vocalists, Lee explained to NME that Poppy‘s drummer, Ralph Alexander, and guitarist, Johnuel Hasney, stepped in for drum and bass parts, while “[Fish] and Mike [Stringer, Spiritbox guitarist and LaPlante‘s husband] ended up doing some guitar.” Lee further described the project as one of “stacking,” where it focused on “adding things based on what each person did.”

“We all have a different shade that we bring to not only the equation, but multiple genres. It’s our own flavour, colour, and ingredient,” Poppy further explained to the UK publication.

And while there was no confirmation as to whether or not there would be more material, Lee apparently chuckled “when asked if the trio had discussed potential band names for this supergroup,” to which the Evanescence vocalist said “I do feel like the song is so exciting that it deserves its time first.”

And while Poppy and Evanescence‘s summer schedules overlap this summer, they tell Shah that they won’t perform the single without [LaPlante], with Poppy saying that “the first time we perform the song, it should be the three of us,” who continued with, “I hate to give away that it’s not happening, but I might as well rip the rug out so people aren’t asking for it up until showtime. We thought about it, but we really want to do it with [LaPlante].”

Lee added that “it would be so rad if we could do a tour together… there’s a lot of schedules to work around. I don’t know if a full tour would ever happen, but we are determined to create a situation where we can play the song live.”

The original teaser for the single emerged on LaPlante, Lee, and Poppy‘s socials with a joint Instagram post that showed a professional photo of the three vocalists with no caption on the 26th of August, before a video teaser for the single was posted to Instagram on the 28th of August. As reported, each teaser was different depending on the vocalist, and encompassed the role they play in the music video.
