The internet has been rife with celebrity rumors lately. Take, for instance, Jim Carrey’s appearance at the César Film Awards last week. Fans went as far as to theorize that Carrey didn’t actually attend, but that his clone did.
Unfortunately, the misinformation didn’t stop there. This week, what appears to be an AI-generated image of Queen Latifah in a hospital bed, began circulating on Facebook. The post claimed she died after “a health battle far more significant than anyone imagined.”
Fortunately, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. The “U.N.I.T.Y.” rapper is alive and well, but the hoax got so out of hand that she had to address it twice on social media to prove she was very much still living.
“Good morning. It’s me, Latifah,” she said in an Instagram video filmed from her car on Thursday. “I’m 100% a-ok. Can’t believe what you read on the internet or see. Can’t believe nothin’ now, right? I’m good. Peace,” she said as she danced to the music playing in her car.
In a follow-up video, which was also filmed from her car, she reiterated that she was doing well. “Everybody’s sharing such care and concern. But honestly, what you saw on Facebook was fake, so I’m fine. I’m 100% A Okay. All right.”
The death hoax began spreading on Facebook earlier in the week, with posts falsely claiming the rapper and actress had died circulating quickly online.
Latifah, whose real name is Dana Owens, is a Grammy-winning rapper and award-winning actress who has built a career in music, television and film. She is widely known for iconic tracks like “U.N.I.T.Y.,” “Ladies First,” and ”Just Another Day…“. On the small screen, she starred as Robyn McCall on CBS’s ”The Equalizer” for five seasons, which ended in May 2022.
The entertainer recently signed a deal with Lifetime to executive produce three original movies through her production company, Flavor Unit Entertainment, alongside longtime producing partner Shakim Compere.
