Fans of The Mavericks frontman Raul Malo are rallying once again after the beloved ’90s country singer shared a heartfelt update from Houston, where he’s undergoing treatment following a setback in his ongoing cancer battle.
A New Health Update
On November 5, Malo posted a candid message and several photos and videos to Facebook, showing him smiling in his hospital room, playing guitar, and chatting with nurses. He explained that he had undergone a new procedure the previous day, writing, “Had a great day today in Houston. Yesterday I had a procedure done that installs a filter to keep blood clots from coming up the legs and into the lungs and making things worse. I don’t remember the name of it. As I basically say yes to whatever the heck they want to do to me.”
After being discharged around noon, Malo shared that he made a few joyful stops — visiting his favorite Houston guitar store, enjoying lunch with his wife at Kenny & Ziggy’s, and picking up new sneakers.
“In the flood of 2010, I lost this @officialgretsch and I never replaced her. My beautiful wife surprised me and bought it for me,” he added, referring to the guitar he was seen playing in his hospital room. “Big daddy had a great day today! Lol … Anyways, life is good here in H-Town.”

Support From Dwight Yoakam
In October, country legend Dwight Yoakam — who toured with The Mavericks through much of 2025 — posted a moving tribute when Malo revealed his cancer had advanced.
“Raul, I will deeply miss the exuberant and enormous musical joy that you and the rest of The Mavericks brought to the stage every night,” Yoakam wrote. “We are holding you in our thoughts, and sending our prayers for healing.”

Malo first disclosed his stage 4 colon cancer diagnosis in the spring, later explaining that the disease had spread to the membranes surrounding his brain and spinal cord, known as leptomeningeal metastases (LMD). Despite the difficult news, the 60-year-old singer has maintained his signature optimism, assuring fans that he’s “in no way alone, or scared.”
As The Mavericks pause touring plans so Malo can focus on recovery, fans and fellow artists continue to fill social media with messages of strength, love, and gratitude for the voice behind some of country’s most timeless songs.
