President Donald Trump raised eyebrows by seemingly breaking royal protocol when meeting King Charles III and Queen Camilla during their recent visit to the White House.
On Monday, April 27, the president, 79, and First Lady Melania Trump greeted Charles and Camilla in front of the White House. In a video of the moment captured by Bloomberg, Donald can be seen giving the king, 77, a firm handshake while Melania, 56, kissed the queen, 77, on both cheeks.
After posing for photos, there was a brief moment that made some believe the president did something inappropriate with His Majesty. The duo turned to enter the White House and Donald gave Charles a quick pat on the arm as they turned around. Many operate under the false assumption that there is a rule against touching the royal family. However, there is no such rule.

According to the royal family’s website, there is no official protocol for meeting the royals beyond common politeness.
“The King and Queen meet thousands of people each year in the UK and overseas. Before meeting Their Majesties, many people ask how they should behave,” the website reads. “The simple answer is that there are no obligatory codes of behaviour – just courtesy.”
The website goes on to note that, although there are no formal rules, many wish to observe the traditional greetings for the royal family, which include a neck bow from men and a small curtsy for the queen. However, a simple handshake, which Donald did, is also acceptable.
The royals are currently in the United States on a state visit to mark the 250th anniversary of US independence.
