A new poster has been revealed for the film Primate. The horror film inspired by the Stephen King novel Cujo is centered around a once loveable chimp who contracts rabies. Once the primate contracts the virus, he becomes irate and quickly starts hunting the family that once fostered him. Although many have been quick to claim that the film is a reference to what happened to Charla Nash and her friend’s chimp, this rumor has already been shut down. The newly released promotional material shows the Chimpanzee, Ben, looking at the corner, possibly reflecting on the horrors he has just committed.
The poster also features the words “Something’s Wrong With Ben,” which is one of the first things said within the popular trailer. Based on the promotional material alone, this could end up becoming one of the most terrifying horror movies of the new year. While the film won’t air until January 9th, the studio is definitely taking advantage of the spooky season to tease its popular film.
One aspect that is generating a lot of hype around the movie is how Ben was created. The Chimpanzee is not only computer-generated, but is also made through a combination of animatronics and puppetry. This usage of practical effects has caused many horror purists to mark this film on their calendar. Although practical effects were once commonplace, they have become almost abandoned in the modern day. Thankfully, movies like Primate are bringing the practice back.
Moreover, while talking to Netflix Junkie, the director revealed something interesting about the film. It isn’t intended to be solely a horror thriller; in fact, the director has stated that there will be several dark comedic moments thrown in as well. Although this might overshadow many of the horrific moments of the film, the director has assured audiences that it will mesh well with the movie’s overall tone.
Ultimately, the new promotional material only hints at good things for the coming film. Primate might easily become the most unsettling horror movie of the new year. Although it was inspired by the Stephen King novel, Cujo, this movie is likely to go in a completely different direction. Either way, this is going to be one of the most creative films to air in 2026.
