While he made these politically-led comments, Harry did emphasise that he was not speaking as a politician, mirroring something his mother Princess Diana once said.
Harry said today: “I am not here as a politician. I am here as a soldier who understands service, as a humanitarian who has seen the human cost of conflict, and as a friend of Ukraine who believes the world must not grow used to this war or numb to its consequences.
“Because what is happening here is not simply a war about territory. It is a war about values. About sovereignty.
“About whether the principles that underpin our shared democracy still hold meaning.”
This was similar to something said by Princess Diana in January 1997, when she visited Angola and walked over landmines.
As reported by ITV, Diana – who died in August 1997 – visited Angola at the height of international debate over landmine use.
It is believed that at the time, her visit was deemed as too political.
However, like Harry, Diana made it clear she was not a “political figure”.
When talking about the political frenzy her visit had created, Diana said: “I am not a political figure, I am a humanitarian figure and always have been and always will be.”
