As Prince William traveled to Brazil for the Earthshot Prize award ceremony, Harry announced he was embarking on another pseudo-royal tour as he headed to Canada.
The pair’s trips clashed, with the Duke of Sussex landing in Canada on Wednesday. Prince Harry‘s team has insisted the timing of his announcement was “unavoidable” due to his private security arrangements.
However, former royal butler Grant Harrold has said the simultaneous timing of the trips “is not good.”
Speaking exclusively to The Express US, Harrold explained, “It divides everyone and means they are competing with one another.
“It is possible Harry planned this because he would have known his brother was on tour, so he could have decided to do his at the same time to divide the media interest purposely. I would like to think it isn’t the case, and it is just a clash of diaries, and it could be coincidental.”
Harrold suggested Harry’s announcement will likely “annoy” William. He told us, “This is something he is passionate about and really wants to promote, so he wants the media on his side and not to have to compete.
“So William will see this as a problem and be annoyed. The tour isn’t the issue; it will be the timing and the clash that annoy him.”
The clash happened as William began his visit to Brazil, with news soon emerging of his brother’s trip to Canada. It was revealed that the Duke of Sussex’s Toronto trip will overlap with the days William is set to honor his Earthshot Prize award winners and represent King Charles at COP30 in Belem.
The timing of Harry’s announcement raised eyebrows as, historically, there has been an unspoken rule in the royal family that major announcements should be postponed when other royals are on tour.
However, sources close to Harry have said his announcement was unavoidable due to Harry losing his security upon stepping down from his role as a working royal.
The source claimed to The Mirror that the period of time in which Harry and Meghan can release details of their events is much shorter than it is for the King or William.
A spokesperson for the Sussexes confirmed they had notified royal communications of Harry’s trip “as a courtesy.”
It came after a spokesman for Harry said, “This week, during the annual period of Remembrancetide, Prince Harry will travel to Toronto, Canada. There, he will meet with veterans, members of the armed forces community, and military charities.
“This visit, months in the planning, marks a return to a city that has a special place in the Duke’s heart, having played host to the Invictus Games back in 2017.”
